Jean Paul Gaultier was an avant-garde eyewear designer in the 1980s. Although Japan was the most expensive place to manufacture eyeglass frames at the time, Gaultier didn't want to settle for anything less than the finest craftsmanship for his sunglasses. Unlike most other designers, he did not outsource his layouts to large factories in order to reduce the cost of production and mass production, but instead closely followed the design and production of his sunglasses by the legendary manufacturer Murai Japan.
